One day this terrible war will be over,
and we'll be people again,
and not just Jews. (April 11, 1944)
[text from the libretto of Annelies, based on The Diary of Anne Frank]
This remarkably sensitive setting of The Diary of Anne Frank has been praised by critics worldwide as "stunning in both its beauty and utter simplicity" (ClassicalNet) and "[set] with such tender respect it's almost impossible to hear without tears." (The Observer)
James Whitbourn is the first composer to be granted permission to set the actual diary entries taken from The Diary of Anne Frank within a full-length choral work. Commissioned by the Jewish Music Institute, he worked with writer Melanie Challenger who crafted a libretto from her newly-translated portions of the diary.
Movements from the work were premiered on Holocaust Remembrance Day in January, 2005, with H M Queen Elizabeth in attendance, and the full orchestral premiere, conducted by Leonard Slatkin, came three months later. Whitbourn later created a more intimate instrumental scoring in which version Annelies was premiered in The Netherlands on Anne Frank’s 80th birthday, in June 2009, with Arianna Zukerman in the solo role.
For the New York City premiere, the musical forces behind the GRAMMY-nominated NAXOS recording of Annelies - soprano Arianna Zukerman, the Westminster Williamson Voices, the Lincoln Trio, Bharat Chandra, and conductor James Jordan - have reunited for a one-night-only presentation of the work in the acoustically-brilliant Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.
